A climate agreement reached at COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan

Sunday, 24 November, 2024

A historic climate deal between industrialized and developing countries was reached in Baku, Azerbaijan, following two weeks of rigorous negotiations. The wealthy nations agreed to provide $300 billion yearly, with the money to be delivered by 2035, while the developing countries had demanded a $1.3 trillion annual contribution. The poor countries contended that although they are disproportionately affected by climate change, industrialized nations are largely to blame for emissions since they have historically made the largest contributions to greenhouse gas emissions.

Extreme heatwaves, rising sea levels, floods, forest fires, and droughts that endanger ecosystems and livelihoods are just a few of the urgent climate change issues that poor countries must deal with. These countries also aim to address the health threats brought on by climate change, including waterborne illnesses like cholera and bilharzia that are made worse by flooding and inadequate sanitation.

The funds will be utilized for a number of climate resilience initiatives:

Afforestation is the process of planting trees to absorb carbon dioxide released by developed countries.
Building boreholes in regions affected by drought is one way to supply water.
Resettling flood victims and battling forest fires are examples of disaster management.
Resilient infrastructure is constructed to endure the effects of climate change.
Sustainable agriculture is the promotion of economically and environmentally sound agricultural methods.
Facilitating the transfer of environmentally friendly technologies to developing nations in order to lower emissions and promote sustainable development is known as technology transfer.

One important United Nations conference devoted to combating climate change is COP29. In its capacity as the highest decision-making body of the UNFCCC, COP promotes international collaboration, evaluates the status of climate goals, and negotiates financial and technological commitments. The main goals of the conference are to ensure that nations meet their climate targets and to implement the Paris Agreement, which was adopted at COP21.

To make sure that the global community stays responsible and dedicated to addressing climate change, COP is a crucial forum. In addition to addressing disparities and guaranteeing a fair transition for all, it promotes cooperation, allowing countries to address the climate crisis together. The conference emphasizes that governments and individuals alike must act proactively to lessen the effects.
