Similarities
- Both are used to identify a computer or a device
- Both are unique
Differences
- an IP address can be changed (dynamic) but a MAC address if fixed
- MAC stands for Media Access Control address whereas IP stands for Internet Protocol Address
- MAC Address operates in the data link layer whereas IP Address operates in the network layer.
- MAC address is a physical address whereas IP address is a logical address
- NIC manufacturer provides the MAC address while IP addresses is provided by the internet service provider
